Instagram is reportedly delving into new territory with the development of a feature called Friend Map, which bears resemblance to Snap Map. According to leaks by mobile developer Alessandro Paluzzi on February 24, Instagram users may soon have access to a world map-like interface showcasing the last active locations of their friends based on shared location data.

The leaked screenshots reveal that Friend Map will offer users the ability to view their friends scattered across the map, provided they opt to share their location information. Additionally, users will have the option to leave notes on the map, akin to the Notes feature in the Direct Message section. This new interface could potentially serve as a novel way for users to discover people and accounts in close proximity to their location.

Friend Map is anticipated to offer users granular controls over their location data, including the ability to choose which friends can view their shared location. The feature may also incorporate end-to-end encryption of location data for added privacy. Users will likely be able to seamlessly add posts to the map by including location information in their posts, enhancing the interactive nature of the platform.

Moreover, Instagram may introduce a feature called Nearby, hinted at by a new Stories icon seen in an old post from October 2023. This feature could potentially complement Friend Map, allowing users to directly view nearby users' posts within the map interface.

While specific details regarding Friend Map are still scarce, the leak hints at a promising addition to Instagram's array of features, offering users enhanced connectivity and exploration capabilities based on shared location data.
